Facile synthesis of ultrasmall polydopamine-polyethylene glycol nanoparticles for cellular delivery

Abstract: Very small polydopamine (PDA) polyethylene glycol (PEG) crosslinked copolymer (PDA-PEG) nanoparticles have been prepared following a convenient one-step procedure in aqueous solution. Particle sizes and colloidal stabilities have been optimized by varying PEG in view of chain length and end group functionalities. In particular, amine-terminated PEG3000 [PEG 3000 (NH 2) 2 ] reacted with polydopamine intermediates so that very small, crosslinked PDA-PEG nanoparticles with sizes of less than 50 nm were formed. Th… Show more

“…Based on the acrylic properties of thymolphthalein, the as‐prepared cytosensors could also afford a visible sensitive smartphone‐enabled cytosensing of cancer cells. In order to improve the stability of PDA NPs in various biological media, polyethylene glycol (PEG)‐grafted PDA NPs with an average size of 40 nm were prepared by Harvey et al Moreover, these amines‐terminated PEG–PDA NPs could be further functionalized, enabling their use in various biomedical applications. However, PEG‐grated NPs were reported to have biodegradation and immunogenicity problems .…”

“…In particular, amine-terminated PEG3000 (PEG3000(NH 2 ) 2 ) reacted with polydopamine intermediates to form very small, crosslinked PDA-PEG nanoparticles with less than 50 nm in size. The formed PDA-PEG nanoparticles revealed efficient cellular uptake and high cytocompatibility thus rendering them attractive candidates for cell imaging or for drug delivery applications [24]. In a third example, anisotropic brush polymers with a protein backbone and polymer chains as side chains were discussed.…”

“…PDA nanoparticles (NPs), as a drug carrier, possess sustained drug release ability and excellent antioxidant activity due to the nanosized effects [ 5 7 ]. Additionally, the amine groups of PDA can help chemicals feasibly conjugate on the surface of PDA NPs [ 8 ]. Therefore, PDA NPs is an ideal drug carrier for drug delivery in hydrogel.…”
