Facile Template Synthesis of Ordered Mesoporous Carbon with Polypyrrole as Carbon Precursor

Abstract: A new and facile synthetic route of ordered mesoporous carbon with polypyrrole as carbon precursor has been developed. The mesoporous silica host is first impregnated with ferric chloride, which serves as the oxidant for the vapor-phase oxidative polymerization of pyrrole vapor at room temperature. Such a stoichiometric reaction provides a rational control of loading with polypyrrole and also determines the amount of carbon after subsequent pyrolysis in the host silica. Ordered mesoporous carbon is obtained af… Show more

“…The EISA method made it feasible to regulate pore structures and pore sizes and allowed the preparation of various mesoporous materials from water-insoluble systems, including mesoporous silicas [2,7,8,10,[15][16][17][18], mesoporous resins [3,6,9,11], mesoporous TiO 2 [19][20][21], and mesoporous carbons [2,4,12,16,[22][23][24]. The typical procedure used to prepare ordered mesoporous carbons, so-called "template synthesis" [25][26][27][28][29][30], involves the use of mesoporous silicas as hard templates, impregnation of carbon precursors into their mesochannels, carbonization under an inert gas, and finally dissolving the hard template of the "ordered mesoporous silica" through etching in HF (aq) . Although such template syntheses have been used broadly, they can be ineffective means of fabrication of mesoporous carbons because of the many steps required and complicated processing.…”

“…Polypyrrole (PPy) is a kind of conducting polymer, which has been shown to be an effective carbon precursor to prepare carbon materials [33][34][35][36][37][38][39]. Wang et al prepared turbostratic carbon nanospheres via carbonizing polypyrrole nanospheres, which display a high capacity than hard carbon spheres derived from sucrose [39].…”

“…The chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method [8], template method [9], arc discharge method [10] and high temperature pyrolysis method [11] to produce carbon materials normally rely on very harsh and multistep processes, and a large consumption of energy and many chemical sources. By comparison, hydrothermal synthetic approach is a green [12], non-toxic, cheap and sustainable way to obtain carbon materials from biomass [13,14].…”
