Factors affecting the translucency of monolithic zirconia ceramics: A review from materials science perspective

Abstract: The use of monolithic [yttria (Y2O3)-stabilized tetragonal zirconia (ZrO2) polycrystalline] (Y-TZP) ceramics to restore teeth is expanding in dentistry. However, there are still some problems about color matching and the translucency of these ceramics. The employment of Y-TZP ceramics in aesthetically critical regions is questionable due to the insufficient translucency and opacity of the restorations. The objective of this review was to assess the factors affecting the translucency of monolithic Y-TZP ceramic… Show more

“…The most important problem of these restorations is chipping and delamination of the veneering ceramic. 1,5 In order to avoid these problems, monolithic zirconia restoration systems that include a single material without any veneering dental porcelain have been developed for using with computer-aideddesign and computer-aided-manufacturing (CAD/CAM) systems. 1,6,7 Involvement of monolithic zirconia into dental applications gave rise to higher translucency and enhanced the optical and wear properties of all-ceramic restorations.…”

“…[8][9][10] Thus, by using monolithic zirconia restorations, less tooth preparation is necessitated when compared to that of other monolithic and conventionally veneered ceramics and metalceramic conventional restorations. 5 Translucency is related with the light transmission or diffuse reflectance of a material. When a light beam passes | 1355 PEKKAN through a translucent material, it is scattered, reflected, and/ or transmitted according to crystalline structure, density, dispersion of crystals, pores, and inclusions.…”

“…In addition, digital‐image analysis techniques are employed as non‐contact color measurement methods . Along with color change, translucency properties of a material which can be measured by contrast ratio (CR), light transmittance, and translucency parameter (TP) methods also should be taken into consideration when determining color stability …”

However, to the best of our knowledge, the available data regarding the effect of in-office and at-home bleaching on the optical and surface characteristics of resin nano-ceramic and polymerinfiltrated ceramic network CAD/CAM materials are limited.…”

“…All of these factors along with the milling process may affect the strength, translucency, and dimensional accuracy of the final restoration. 3 Among a sample of US dental patients, most zirconia restorations were cemented with glass ionomer or resin-modified glass ionomer cements. 4 Bonding to zirconia with resin cement can produce a higher crown retention.…”
