Factors associated with potentially harmful drug–drug interactions in older Korean people: A population‐based study

Abstract: The findings of the present study highlight the three most frequent PHDI in Korea according to the Beers Criteria 2015. Healthcare providers should take PHDI into account when treating female patients, medical aid beneficiaries, patients using multiple healthcare institutions, frequent outpatient visitors and patients prescribed more than six medications in a single prescription. “…Meanwhile, the majority of DDI prescriptions were co-prescriptions of corticosteroids and NSAIDs. This is consistent with the result of Yoon et al (2018), who also reported that corticosteroid and NSAID co-prescriptions were the most common DDI prescriptions [ 39 ]. However, the study of Yoon et al (2018) did not consider prescriber factors affecting occurrence of DDIs [ 39 ].…”

However, the study of Yoon et al (2018) did not consider prescriber factors affecting occurrence of DDIs [ 39 ]. Among ambulatory care visits by patients aged ≥65 years in 2009 from the Taiwanese National Health Insurance Database, psychotropic drugs and first-generation antihistamines accounted for most of the top 10 PIMs [ 30 ].…”

“…The prevalences of all three were higher in women who were medical aid beneficiaries, visited multiple healthcare centers during the year, visited healthcare centers as outpatients frequently during the year and who were co-prescribed six or more drugs in a single prescription. 9 Common factors influencing the risk of PHDI include female sex, medical aid beneficiary, use of multiple healthcare institutions during the year, frequent outpatient visits during the year and co-prescription of six or more drugs in a single prescription.…”
