“…( 6): [exp (lnRR ++ )−1] × 100% . The frequency distribution of the effect sizes was fit to a Gaussian distribution function for vegetable yields to test the homogeneity of observations (Gurevitch and Hedges, 1999;Xiang et al, 2021). A chi-square test determined whether the heterogeneity Q total among the lnRR of changes in vegetable yield with organic fertilizer treatment significantly exceeded the expected sampling error (Hedges et al, 1999).…”

“…Despite the large differences between N returned via litterfall, STN was similar across species. STN is most unlikely to be impacted by climatic factors compared to SOC (Xiang et al 2021). However, substantial N losses appear to be occurring especially in the soil under P. reticulata with greater canopy openness and tendency for higher soil temperatures.…”

“…The soil C 4derived C losses are decreasing at a slower rate under C. tomentosum than P. reticulata and H. courbaril in the topsoil layers even though the temperature and humidity were the same. It is supported by the PCA where the13 C soil and15 N soil arrows were more related to C. tomentosum.Indirectly related to climatic factors, larger canopy densities will have higher rainfall and light interception and hence low soil moisture content and soil temperatures, respectively(Liu et al 2018;Xiang et al 2021). The higher canopy openness in P. reticulata stand (Fig.6) could also justify the lower C 4 -derived C due to rapid decomposition rates.…”

“…The challenge with direct measurement of changes in some soil properties especially SOC stock in the short-term of less than five years is that small changes in total SOC occur over a large background stock, making it difficult to detect within this timeframe (Smith, 2004;Lal, 2009). For example, changes in SOC stock associated with afforestation of former croplands have been shown to be significant after 30 years (Li et al, 2012;Bárcena et al, 2014) or at least 10 years (Deng et al, 2016;Chatterjee et al, 2018) with no changes detected below five years (Xiang et al, 2021). Farmers and other land managers may anticipate annual payments to sustain their land management efforts, hence, there is an urgent need to identify measures of SOC and structure that reflect both short-and long-term impacts of land restoration programmes.…”
