Factors influencing acceptance of disability in individuals with spinal cord injury in Neiva, Colombia, South America

Abstract: Acceptance of disability is a serious problem in this group of SCI survivors in Neiva, Colombia, especially among women and individuals with higher levels of depression. Because acceptance of disability is likely a problem for many individuals living with disability in the developing world, future researchers should investigate what interventions (e.g. counseling, pharmacological intervention, social service programs) can be implemented to improve acceptance of disability in this population.

“…Burns can alter an individual's appearance and cause physical pain and disability, while also causing psychological pain, thus hindering the process of rehabilitation. To some extent, an individual's acceptance of their disability and psychological resilience are good indicators of their ability to cope with their situation [5,6]. In order to investigate whether the levels of these indicators could affect the development of PTSD, the acceptance of disability, psychological resilience and PTSD incidence were examined in patients with burns.…”

“…Studies conducted in developing nations have found similar comorbid psychosocial experiences. Two studies from Colombia found that individuals with SCI reported poorer overall health related quality of life (e.g., role limitations related to social functioning, role limitations related to physical functioning, lower general health, and higher pain; Arango-Lasprilla, Nicholls, Olivera, Perdomo, & Arango, 2010) and low rates of acceptance and comorbid depression (Nicholls et al, 2011).…”

“…The redefinition is a shift from comparing oneself with others to focusing on other assets or abilities one has, shifting one's focus from how one is damaged to other values, not interpreting damage as applying to all areas of one's life, and reducing the importance of one's body or appearance (7). Acceptance of disability has been explained from the perspective of looking at oneself as "other than ability" (8) and conceptualized as acceptance of loss. Furthermore, a person's acceptance of disability is likely to be associated with better adjustment to disability.…”
