Resulting from the emerging demands of higher education, university instructors' roles are extending beyond their supervisory positions to those that require mediating changing conditions and keeping up with new developments. On a daily basis, they have to identify various problems, look for solutions and address them swiftly and methodically. New demands necessitate practicing teachers and instructors to become more research-engaged and informed about challenges, which, however, has aroused controversy over the blurring boundaries between teaching and researching. This study thus investigates English language instructors' research engagement at a state university in Türkiye. The data were collected using a survey developed by Borg (2009). 50 language instructors at the School of Foreign Languages participated in the study, 10% of whom (N=11) volunteered for an interview. The data have been analysed to have a better understanding of whether instructors read and do research and how they justify their preferences. As a result, this paper underlines the potential advantages of guidance for language instructors about being a teacher-researcher in the field of language education.

Background: Research activities provide educators with valuable knowledge and skills. Publishing research articles, and presenting the findings at conferences are important among medical educators in their early academic career. However, the level of their research activity practice and affecting factors have not been investigated at Addis Ababa University. Objectives: Assessing the level of research practices and affecting factors among medical educators in an early academic career at Addis Ababa University, College of Health Sciences, School of Medicine Methods: One hundred ninety-five medical educators from all departments in the Scholl of Medicine have participated in this study. Proportional allocation and random sampling techniques were used to select each participant. Socio-demographic and other data were collected using self-administered pretested questionnaires. Data were entered and processed using SPSS version 21.0. Independent t-tests and one-way ANOVA were used. Results: The average number of articles published and presented at conferences per year in the last five years was low (.47±.35 and .45±.29, respectively). These publications were significantly higher among participants with a monthly salary of >10,470 than a monthly salary of ≤ 10, 470 (.45±.37 vs. .39±.28, p=0.03) Ethiopian birrs. Participants with moderate attitudes had published more articles than participants with less attitude towards CPD activities (.65±.43 vs. .20±.00, p=0.10). Medical educators with a higher academic experience of greater than fifteen years published more research articles than educators with an academic experience of fewer than five years (.80±.45 vs .39±.31, p=0.000). Participants from basic science departments presented more articles at conferences than participants from clinical science departments (.56±.29 vs. .39±.28, p=0.000). Conclusion: Research activities were low and affected by monthly salary, and field of the study. Effective research activity programs are crucial to improve research productivity among medical educators in their early academic career.

Research productivity is an important criterion for the university to assess teachers. Studies about factors that affect teachers’ research productivity are increasing nowadays. It is generally agreed that academics’ research productivity depends on how much mentorship is provided to them and how the current working environment is mediated by their research motivation and self-efficacy. Despite the increasing amount of the literature along this line, we know little about what kinds of situations that Chinese university English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers are in and how they regard the importance of mentorship and what roles their working environments would play in affecting their research productivity. To fill the research gap, we utilized the snowball method to collect the survey data from 546 Chinese EFL tertiary teachers. The results show that mentorship is not correlated with research productivity while the working environment has a positive direct correlation with it. Both motivation and self-efficacy mediate the working environment and research productivity significantly. Specifically, only extrinsic motivation has a negative mediation influence on teachers’ research productivity; teachers’ intrinsic motivation and self-efficacy play a positive mediation role in affecting their research productivity.
