Factors Influencing Vaginal Fetal Fibronectin Concentrations during Pregnancy

Abstract: In order to evaluate factors influencing fetal fibronectin concentrations during pregnancy a total of 312 vaginal samples for fetal fibronectin measurements and microbiological culture were collected and later included in a stepwise regression analysis. Preterm premature rupture of membranes, a modified Bishop score ≥6 (p < 0.0001), a low vaginal polymorphonuclear leukocyte count (p < 0.002), the presence of Enterococcus faecalis (p < 0.0001), Prevotella species (p < 0.05), a bacterial vaginosis-associated flo… Show more

“…225,226 To date, fFN testing has been used primarily to rule out PTD in women with preterm labour. 227 Investigators have proposed that fFN may be a marker of infection-related PTD because fFN sensitivity appears greatest for the earliest deliveries (before 32 weeks of gestation), 226 fFN predicts spontaneous but not indicated PTD, 228 and fFN is often 229,230 but not always 65,231 associated with the presence of BV. In addition, exposure of chorion cells in vitro to proinflammatory cytokines and lipopolysacharides stimulates fFN production.…”

“…In theory, expression of collagenases or proteases is increased during these infectious processes. The enzymatic activity of these enzymes on the extracellular matrix can lead to the release of fFN [8,10].…”
