Factors Related to Patient Satisfaction With Complete Denture Therapy

Abstract: Level of education, self-perception of affective and economic status, and quality of life are all related to patient satisfaction. However, the quality of dentures shows the strongest correlation with patient satisfaction. Not only the quality of the denture-bearing area but the denture-wearing experience itself seems to be more important in determining patient satisfaction with mandibular CDs.

“…Apesar de apresentar menor eficiência mastigatória e força de mordida, a prótese total foi avaliada positivamente por seus usuários ao restabelecer a função mastigatória 27 , o que também foi encontrado em outros estudos 18,28,29 . Classificar a mastigação como "boa" também pode estar relacionado ao tempo de uso da prótese 18,29 , ao tipo 30 e à qualidade da prótese 29 . Estudo verificou que, quanto maior o tempo com a pró-tese, maior a satisfação com a mastigação 18 .…”

“…Statistical methods used were sometimes sub optimal. [7][8][9][10][11]21,23 The findings of Yoshizumi, 15 van Waas 9,10,21 and Celebic et al 16 do support denture quality as a predictor of patient satisfaction with complete dentures. Oral anatomy was found to predict patient satisfaction in this study.…”

“…Celebic et al found powerful associations between patient satisfaction and complete denture quality in a study of 200 patients. 16 A structural equation model using data from the large study that this paper is also based on, demonstrated powerful relationships between denture quality, quality of residual alveolar ridge anatomy and patient wearing of dentures and use of dentures for eating. 17 Personality factors have been associated with reduced satisfaction in a number of studies [18][19][20][21][22] but not in others.…”

“…A previous study had concluded that the proportion of patients who complains of poorly fitting dentures is higher for mandibular than to maxillary dentures 15 . Taking this information into account, we performed a complementary assessment, specifically focusing on tumors in the lower jaw and sores that were related to the use of mandibular dentures.…”

“…Indeed, the anatomical characteristics of the lower jaw may explain the poorer retention of a dental prosthesis. Complaints about denture stability, discomfort and pain from traumatic ulcers more commonly concern the mandible than the maxilla, and the chance of ill-adjustment has already been reported to be higher for mandibular than for maxillary dentures, whether assessed by the patient or by the dentist 15 . This study supplied further evidence of the association between oral cancer and recurrent sores that are caused by ill-fitting dentures in an assessment that has been adjusted for the most relevant cancer covariates.…”
