Hybrid construction method with In-situ reinforced concrete (IRC) for wet areas in predominantly precast concrete (PC) buildings to overcome leakage problem is a setback for full IBS adoption. Various options explored to reduce IRC at toilet only to discover the answer is possible within the existing parameters of IBS. The proposal adopts composite construction comprised of metal permanent formwork and ISC casting for toilet floor while PC components remained as buildings structural framing system. This proposal combined different elements of IBS systems offers all the advantages associated with IBS; minimize wastages, better quality, shorter construction period and minimized unskilled workers.

Evaluating lean techniques to improve success factors in the construction phase

Purpose This paper aims to develop a decision-making model to analyze and select the most appropriate lean technique (LT), considering success factors to improve site management and reduce waste in the construction phase. Design/methodology/approach A comprehensive literature review identified six LTs and the 11 most critical factors affecting the efficiency of the construction phase. Then, the appropriateness of these LTs to improve the identified factors were assessed using the analytic hierarchy process. At last, a sensitivity analysis of the results was performed to validate the findings. Findings The results show that the most effective LT to improve success factors in the construction phase is “Daily Huddle Meetings”, and the most critical factor with the greatest impact on LT selection is determined to be “Efficient Construction Management”. Originality/value Few studies have evaluated the suitability of LTs in terms of construction success factors (CSFs). Hence, given the vital role of the construction phase in the whole project life cycle and the impact of LTs in improving the productivity of this phase, this research investigates the correlation between LTs and CSFs to promote efficient site management.

Scaffolding is important equipment in either conventional or IBS construction. Both are needed for the renovation and supporting scaffolding of workers and materials during building operations, structural repairs, or cleaning. Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are a common health concern among construction workers. Workers are also affected by pain in their shoulders, lower back pain, knee pain, leg tiredness and feet due to their occupation. WMSDs are the main issue faced by the scaffolders or workers at the construction site due to lifting and carrying the scaffolding component from transport to the workplace. By identifying the main issue, it provides the opportunity and platform to propose an innovation idea for solving such an issue. Due to that issue, an innovation has been proposed known as scaffolding transportation in a horizontal way. The objectives of the innovation project are to identify the problems associated with the scaffolding transportation method in construction sites and to propose an innovative product to improve the scaffolding transportation method in construction sites. In order to achieve the following objective, the method used for the development of the proposed innovation idea included desk studies on the previous article on the relevant topic and questionnaire surveys to strengthen the innovation idea. This innovative idea has a good impact on the construction industry and it is in line with IR4.0 as well.
