Perception of Nurses’ Support among Family Members of Hospitalized Patients in A Tertiary Health Facility in South-West, Nigeria

Introduction Family members of hospitalized patients are often faced with challenges and may experience difficulty in coping without appropriate support. The aim of this study was to assess hospitalized patients' family members' perception of nurses' support. Methods A cross-sectional descriptive design was utilized. A total of 138 family members of hospitalized patients in a tertiary health facility were selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected with an adopted structured questionnaire. Analyses of data were performed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and multiple regression. The level of significance was set at 0.05 ( p < .05. Also, age, gender, and type of family were the predictors of emotional support ( R2 = 84, F(6, 131) = 5.92, p < .05. Results Twenty-seven qualitative studies were included in the review. A thematic synthesis showed over 100 themes and subthemes across the studies. A cluster analysis revealed positive elements and others that were seen in the studies as a barrier (hindrance) to clinical learning. Positive elements included supportive instructors, close supervision, and belonging (in the team). Unsupportive instructors, a lack of supervision and not being included were seen as a hindrance. Three key overarching themes that could describe a successful placement were revealed as “Preparation,” “Welcomed and wanted” and “Supervision experiences”. A conceptual model of clinical placement elements conducive to nursing students’ learning was developed to enhance understanding of the complexities associated with supervision. The findings and model are presented and discussed. Conclusion A significant number of families of hospitalized patients reported poor perception of cognitive, emotional, and overall support from nurses. Adequate staffing is a prerequisite for effective family support. Nurses also need appropriate training in providing family support. The focus of family support training should emphasize practices that nurses can use in everyday interactions with patients and family members.

Contextualização: Diante da pandemia COVID-19, declarada em março de 2020, a Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais se adaptou aos desafios da telessaúde para o estágio supervisionado em Terapia Ocupacional, na saúde da criança e adolescente, respaldada pela resolução nº 516 do Conselho Federal de Fisioterapia e Terapia Ocupacional. Processo de Intervenção/acompanhamento: Este trabalho relata a criação do serviço remoto de Terapia Ocupacional, descrevendo seu processo organizacional coordenado para assistir 16 famílias de crianças com transtornos do desenvolvimento. Análise crítica da prática: As metas funcionais das crianças de nove das famílias foram alcançadas totalmente e 85,7% responderam positivamente, evidenciando a eficácia do modelo remoto. No entanto, observou-se dilatação da carga horária do estágio, devido à intensificação das atividades assíncronas para elaboração de materiais personalizados, aumentando a percepção de sobrecarga da equipe. Síntese das considerações: Para manter resultados funcionais positivos, evitando a sobrecarga, faz-se necessário reavaliar a carga horária destinada às atividades assíncronas.Palavras-chave: Telemonitoramento. Contextualization: : Faced with the COVID-19 pandemic declared in March 2020, the Federal University of Minas Gerais adapted to the challenges of telehealth for the supervised internship in Occupational Therapy, in child and adolescent health, supported by Resolution No. 516 of the Federal Council of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy. Intervention process/accompaniment: The present work reports the creation of the remote Occupational Therapy service describing its coordinated organizational process to assist 16 families of children with developmental disorders. Critical analysis of the practice: The functional goals of the children of nine of the families were fully achieved and 85.7% responded positively, evidencing the effectiveness of the remote model. However, there was an increase in the workload of the internship, due to the intensification of asynchronous activities for the development of personalized materials, increasing the perception of the team's overload. Summary of considerations: To maintain positive functional results, avoiding overload, it is necessary to reassess the workload allocated to asynchronous activities.Keywords: Telemonitoring. Factors Predicting Older Patients′ Family Involvement by Nursing Staff in Hospitals: The View of Hospital Nurses in Israel

According to the family-centered approach, the involvement of family in the care of hospitalized older patients is a crucial element of quality care. Active involvement of family in care by the nursing staff depends on different factors, including attitudes towards the importance of family in the care and perception of the interactions with the family. This study aims to identify the factors predicting staff behavior of involving the family in the care process. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 179 nursing staff at a hospital, using a self-report questionnaire examining staff attitudes towards the importance of family in care, the perception of the interactions with the family (family behavior, communication and conflicts), and staff behavior toward family involvement. The findings point out the importance that staff attitudes have on their behavior in the active involvement of family in the care of older patients. Staff behavior of family involvement was predicted by their perceptions of the family (as conversational partners and having their own resources), less conflicts with the family, and staff academic education. Staff behavior toward family is influenced by their attitude and staff–family relationships. Educational programs should emphasize the importance of family, as well as dealing with conflicts.
