“…Family Communication Patterns 227 use (Chaffee, McLeod, & Atkin, 1971), citizenship norms (Sheinkopf, 1973), television viewing habits (Abel, 1976;Chaffee & Tims, 1976;Dimmick, 1976), consumer learning (Moore & Moschis, 1981), conflict management (Koerner & Fitzpatrick, 1997, 2002b, attitudes and behaviors concerned with sexuality and alcohol use (Booth-Butterfield & Sidelinger, 1998), communication apprehension (Hsu, 1998), successful separation from parents and adjustment to college (Orrego & Rodriguez, 2001), perspective taking (Koerner & Cvancara, 2002), and the development of reticence (Kelly, Keaten, Finch, Duarte, Hoffman, & Michels, 2002). Limited attention has been given, however, to how family communication patterns help or hinder adolescent socialization pertaining to specific interpersonal communication competencies (Koesten & Anderson, 2004), and to the role that biological sex plays in the development and employment of those communication competencies.…”
