Family study of subthreshold psychopathology in a community sample

Abstract: It is important to broaden the study of subthreshold psychopathology to multiple disorders. In particular cases, controlling for co-morbidity with other subthreshold and FS conditions altered the patterns of familial aggregation. Etiological processes that are common to particular disorders and subthreshold conditions are discussed.

“…The available data indicate that comorbidity is substantial between FS and SUB disorders as well as between SUB disorders [24], this comorbidity aggregates in families [38], and homotypic as well as heterotypic continuity (comorbidity) occurs with SUB and FS disorders in youths over time [25,39]. That will be the basis of future work using these data.…”

“…While the definition for subthreshold diagnoses are somewhat arbitrary, the methodology reported in previous studies was used in this paper [7982]. Subthreshold anxiety was defined as exhibiting at least three of fourteen anxiety symptoms of GAD (six symptoms) and panic disorder (eight symptoms), but not meeting full criteria for anxiety disorder (GAD or Panic).…”

“…Thus, studying broad internalizing and externalizing syndromes has broader applicability to examining intergenerational associations in a community sample for young ages than would focussing on comorbidity between more specific forms of disorders. In addition, symptoms can be serious even when they do not meet diagnostic thresholds (Gotlib et al ., 1995), and accounting for such subthreshold conditions has been found to better account for patterns of familial transmission of psychopathology (Shankman et al ., 2008). In addition, G3 participated in assessments in early childhood, when specific disorders are less differentiated (Weiss and Catron, 1994).…”
