Industrial hemp is a versatile plant that can be grown for fiber, grain, and extraction. Over the past decade, hemp has generated significant interest because of its environmentally friendly and sustainable production practices. Kentucky has been one of the pioneer states to reintroduce hemp production in the United States. This paper aims to explore the factors affecting hemp production in Kentucky using a farm-level panel dataset accounting for county-specific economic, environmental, and agronomic factors. The main objective of this study is to provide preliminary insights into the relationship between variables rather than establishing causal relationships due to data constraints. A reduced form econometric model on farm-level hemp acres was developed using unique Kentucky data on hemp production from 2017 to 2019. The regression analysis results show that Kentucky hemp acreage positively responds to an increase in cannabidiol (CBD) biomass price. When CBD prices increase by 10%, hemp acreage would increase by approximately 1%. Based on the “with” and “without” county-level weather information model results, the study demonstrates that weather is an important determinant of Kentucky’s total hemp acreage. Our analysis concludes that the hemp acreage response is due to changes in farm-specific, plant-specific, county-specific factor and market information availability, meaning that a platform for CBD biomass price reporting and a friendly regulatory environment are critical for producers seeking to plan their hemp production. In addition, inconsistencies in state regulations and reporting standards may create additional challenges for hemp production. Thus, additional support through university extension programs and other statewide support services may help hemp producers to expand their production.

A sustainable transition in the agri‐food system holds society‐wide implications. Farmers play central roles in responding to climate change, environmental degradation and sustainable food production. Still, factors underlying how farmers make decisions and manage their farms are often marginalised in efforts to develop policies to tackle these issues. The concept of relational values, defined as preferences, principles and virtues based on human–nature relationships, recently emerged to expand understandings of environmental decision‐making in general and that of farmers specifically. As agricultural landscapes are dynamic and characterised by the interaction of various actors with diverse values and interests, how these interactions influence farmers' decisions remains underexplored. This paper engages with these issues by using qualitative data on Norwegian horticultural farmers' motivations, opportunities and challenges in farming. We find that their relational values (a) are influential in shaping farmers' decisions about farm management and (b) are continually unfolding and embedded within a web of other actors, including grocers, retailers, consumers, farm advisors and policymakers, which shapes farmers' enactment of their relational values. In the context of agriculture, this research underlines the utility of an in‐depth understanding of relational values as embedded in wider social systems to enrich analyses of farmer decision‐making. How farmers' relational values are shaped and realised through interactions with other actors holds important implications for policy and programming to navigate tensions between different interests and actors for sustainable and long‐term change. This research explores the impact of learning Malay as a second language on communication and social integration within the Muslim community of Ban Iso Narathiwat, Thailand. While the native language of the community is Thai, Malay is taught as an additional language due to its cultural and historical significance. The study adopts a qualitative approach, conducting interviews and surveys with community members, educators, and language experts. Participants' perspectives and experiences regarding their proficiency in Malay as a second language are examined to understand their motivations, challenges, and perceived benefits. Preliminary findings indicate that learning Malay facilitates improved communication with the Malay-speaking community and enhances cultural exchange. Additionally, it grants access to historical and religious texts written in Jawi script, strengthening their connection to their cultural heritage. The research focuses on the impact of learning Malay as a second language on social integration within the Muslim community of Ban Iso Narathiwat, Thailand. It aims to investigate how the learning of Malay influences interactions, mutual understanding, and social relationships in a diverse and dynamic community. Further research is recommended to explore the long-term effects of bilingualism and its implications on other aspects of community life.
