Fast responsive, optical trace level ammonia sensor for environmental monitoring

Abstract: BackgroundAmmonia is a ubiquitous chemical substance which is created in technical and biological processes and harmful to many different organisms. One specific problem is the toxicity of ammonia in fish at levels of 25 μg/l - a very common issue in today’s aqua culture. In this study we report a development of a fast responsive, optical ammonia sensor for trace concentrations.ResultsDifferent hydrogels have been investigated as host polymers for a pH based sensing mechanism based on fluorescent dyes. A porou… Show more

“…Fluorescein derivatives have been used as sensing species displaying linear dependency over wide ranges of ammonia concentrations. [40][41][42] FRET-based optical chemosensors for the detection of ammonia have been reported [43][44][45][46] and the advantages have been highlighted as they can generate dual or multiple emissions under a single wavelength excitation, resulting in more effective ratiometric detection in comparison to those that need two separate excitation wavelengths. 47 Furthermore, their design can easily be modified by varying the FRET components.…”

“…Other reversible luminescent indicators for measuring temperature, Cl À , H 2 O, NH 3 and NO 3 À have been developed [142][143][144][145][146][147][148][149]. Although no 2D applications using these sensors have been realised in soil or sediments, they can potentially be applied for planar optode sensing and most of the sensors can be interrogated with ratiometric imaging approaches.…”

“…Various techniques are available to detect ammonia such as catalytic ammonia sensors [ 6 , 7 ], optical gas sensors [ 8 ] and spectrometric ammonia detection [ 9 ], which are expensive and need experienced operators. But chemiresistive sensors are simple, portable, stable, reliable and highly selective while exhibiting high accuracy with faster response and recovery times [ 10 ].…”
