Fast-rotating nearby solar-type stars

All cataloged stellar moving groups and associations with ages 100 Myr and within 100 pc of Earth have Galactic space motions (UVW) situated in a "good box" with dimensions ∼20 km s −1 on a side. Torres et al. defined the Octans Association as a group of 15 stars with age "20 Myr?" and located ∼140 pc from Earth, but with average V space velocity −3.6 km s −1 that is well outside of the good box. We present a list of 14 Hipparcos star systems within 100 pc of Earth that we call "Octans-Near"; these systems have UVW similar to those of the much more distant Octans Association. The Octans-Near stars have apparent ages between about 30 and 100 Myr and their relationship to the Octans Association stars is unclear. Six additional star systems have UVW similar to those of Octans-Near stars and likely ages 200 Myr. These six systems include the late-type binary star EQ Peg-6.2 pc from Earth with likely age 100 Myr and thus likely to be the nearest known pre-main sequence star system. The UVW of stars in a previously proposed ∼200 Myr old Castor moving group are not too dissimilar from the UVW of Octans-Near stars. However, stars in the Castor group-if it exists at all-are mostly substantially older than 200 Myr and thus generally can readily be distinguished from the much younger Octans-Near stars.

High-resolution échelle spectra of 42 nearby southern solar-type stars have been obtained, in a search for young, single, active, and rapidly rotating sun-like stars suitable for Doppler imaging and Zeeman Doppler imaging studies. As a result of this survey, 13 stars were determined to be youthful with ages less than 600 Myr (Hyades age) and eight of these were found to have projected rotational velocities in excess of 15 km s −1 . In addition, five spectroscopic binary systems were identified. Of those stars observed for this survey, HD 106506 is the most outstanding target for mapping active regions. It is an apparently young and single star with rapid rotation (v sin i ∼ 80 km s −1 ), strong Hα chromospheric activity (log R Hα ∼ −4.2), and deformation of the spectral line profiles indicating the presence of large starspots.

Direct imaging surveys for exoplanets commonly exclude binary stars from their target lists, leaving a large part of the overall planet demography unexplored. To address this gap in our understanding of planet formation and evolution, we have launched the first directimaging survey dedicated to circumbinary planets: SPOTS, the Search for Planets Orbiting Two Stars. We discuss the theoretical context, scientific merit, and technical feasibility of such observations, describe the target sample and observational strategy of our survey, and report on the first results from our pilot survey of 26 targets with the VLT NaCo facility. While we have not found any confirmed substellar companions to date, a number of promising candidate companions remain to be tested for common proper motion in upcoming follow-up observations. We also report on the astrometry of the three resolved binaries in our target sample. This pilot survey constitutes a successful proof of concept for our survey strategy and paves the way for a second stage in the exploratory observations with VLT SPHERE.
