Fate of unattended fearful faces in the amygdala is determined by both attentional resources and cognitive modulation

Abstract: The evidence for amygdala processing of emotional items outside the focus of attention is mixed. We hypothesized that differences in attentional demands may, at least in part, explain prior discrepancies. In the present study, attention was manipulated by parametrically varying the difficulty of a central task, allowing us to compare responses evoked by unattended emotion-laden faces while the attentional load of a central task was varied. Reduced responses to unattended emotional stimuli may also reflect an a… Show more

“…These key differences may contribute to the disparity between studies in laterality of amygdala responses that predicted treatment outcome. In particular, a growing number of studies indicates that attentional factors exert considerable influence over patterns of amygdala activation add katie (14,30,38,39). Future research using comparable paradigms in both adult and child patient samples will be useful for clarifying whether the differences in laterality of activation associated with outcome reflect methodological inconsistencies between studies, differences in diagnostic status of participating patients, or developmental differences in the neural substrates of varied psychopathologies.…”

“…Frontal activations in the mindfulness group could reflect general networks for task execution and attention . Attention influences the processing of emotional stimuli (Pessoa et al, 2005), dampens emotional reactivity and decreases amygdala activation (Lutz et al, 2008;McRae et al, 2010). Thus, one could conclude that a main effect of the mindfulness instruction lies in a modified attentional focus.…”

“…In the latter case the difference between the conscious and the nonconscious mode is one of degree. This argument has been made in a number of studies by Pessoa and Ungerleider (Pessoa, 2005;Pessoa et al, 2006;Pessoa, McKenna, Gutierrez, & Ungerleider, 2002;Pessoa, Padmala, & Morland, 2005;Pessoa & Ungerleider, 2004). Pessoa and collaborators (2005) paid attention to individual difference and discounted these in their fMRI analysis.…”
