Fatigue and Damage Tolerance of Aging Airplane Structures

Abstract: The paper highlights key questions in ensuring safe operation of aging civil\transport aircraft in Russia. Presented is the analysis of current requirements to fatigue, fail-safe and damage tolerance for transport aircraft structures stated in FARs, Advisory Circulars (UAS) and Russian Airworthiness Regulations\ AR IAC Aviation Regulations. The paper gives the design goals and actual service life values\ service years of aging aircraft fleet and data on full-scaled fatigue tests, together with methods and appr… Show more

“…[67,68] Introduction of fracture mechanics to bonded materials has revolutionized the field leading to more reliable structures by introducing new design criteria and predictive tools. [69][70][71][72] Nowadays, one of the faster developing industries is the wind energy highly supported by the EU which is committed to reach the green transition goals. [73,74] Here, for wind turbine rotor blades, fracture mechanics is so crucial that 8 out of 9 recognized failure modes of wind turbine blades are rooted to fracture and its special, interface, forms: delamination (crack growth between composite material layers) and debonding (crack growth along interface between two bonded materials).…”

“…Therefore, a reliable diagnostics of the products damaging for assessing their residual lifetime, especially under cyclic loading, is a very important factor for the safe operation of industrial objects, technological equipment or structural elements. There are a number of methods for detecting damages or diagnosing the material state in oil and gas pipeline constructions [1,2], railway transport [3][4][5] or aviation [6,7]. It is clear that not all defects or micro-damages can cause the failure therefore it is necessary to know the minimum dimension of the damage that is of danger and that should be reliable detected.…”
