“…The inspection methods for cable systems can be split into two categories: online monitoring and defect identification. [22, 23] Partial discharge detection, reflection measurement, ultraviolet detection, and infrared (IR) detection belong to the online monitoring approaches. X‐ray inspection, Acoustic emission (AE) detection, and terahertz non‐destructive testing are typical defect detection technologies.…”

“…To further identify the type of discharge inside the cable terminals and determine the discharge location, L. Zhou et al. [23, 28] established a partial discharge testing system to study the discharge onset/extinction voltage, the discharge development process, and associated spectrum characteristics under different low‐temperature conditions. Moreover, characteristics of both positive and negative half‐perimeter asymmetry of the discharge spectrum were revealed, which provided explanations for the frequent explosions of the vehicle cable terminals operating in alpine regions.…”

“…Ethylene propylene rubber (EPR) has become one of the fastest developing synthetic rubbers in the past 20 years and has been widely used as the train-mounted cable insulation material for electric locomotive due to its excellent mechanical properties, ozone resistance, thermal resistance, electrical insulation and chemical corrosion resistance [1][2][3]. The service status of EPR cables onboard electric locomotive is directly related to the safe and reliable operation of trains, and the reliability of EPR cable largely depends on the ageing degree of insulation [4][5][6]. According to the statistics of HXD1D electric locomotive EPR cable insulation breakdown accidents, no matter the cable body or cable terminal breakdown explosion, the frequency at the bending position is high, which indicates that the bending state aggravates the ageing degree of trainmounted EPR cable insulation.…”

“…As for the detection method, partial discharge is one of the most popular tools for detecting the insulation internal state in cable terminals [6][7][8]. A test circuit was previously built [9,10], and it successfully detected the partial discharge signal from air defects inside the cable through the shock wave voltage method. Previous studies [11][12][13][14] also successfully detected the partial discharge signal inside the cable by UHF detection and the HF/UHF joint analysis method.…”
