This study focused on the position of first person pronouns in personality items of the MMPI and their social desirability ratings. Items beginning with first person pronouns received more favorable ratings by different groups of judges than items having a first person pronoun other than in the first position in the sentence. These results were discussed in terms of a “stimulus pull” hypothesis. Relevant literature on visual scanning patterns as influenced by sentence structure was briefly discussed.
