Feasibility analysis of renewable hybrid energy supply options for Masirah Island

Abstract: In this paper, the assessment and modelling of alternative renewable energy systems for Masirah Island is considered. The hybrid system that is simulated comprises various combinations of wind turbines and/or photovoltaic (PV) supplemented with diesel generators and short-term battery storage. It was found from the analysis that the PV -wind -diesel hybrid system, with battery unit, has the lowest cost values as compared to solar-only or wind -diesel hybrid systems. Furthermore, the study illustrates that for … Show more

“…Moreover, considering an average CO 2 damage cost of 20 US$/tCO 2 , the environmental avoided cost is estimated to be US$ 28,533. It is worth mentioning that the cost of energy (COE) of solar PV systems is still higher than that of diesel-based generation in most of the locations in Oman (Al-Badi et al 2011). The COE of solar PV systems for the site under study is estimated to be about 260 US$/MWh (Al-Badi et al 2011).…”

“…The six renewable energy pilot projects announced by the Authority for Electricity Regulation are being implemented within the RAECO networks. These projects offer economic benefits in the form of avoided costs of diesel fuel generation and other potential benefits such as the transfer of knowledge and experience to Oman, as well as capacity building within the RAECO and other Oman entities and companies (Al-Badi et al 2011). One of these projects is a 100 kW solar PV system carried out in Hijj in Al Wosta Governorate.…”

“…A hybrid renewable energy system with fuel cell technology has been suggested by various researchers for small-scale power generation [1][2][3][4][5][6]. The current paper examines the techno-economic aspects of using PV-fuel cellbattery for an eco-house in Oman and also presents sizing optimization and simulation results for the proposed system.…”

“…Further research has focused on storage devices and battery management units [9]. Hybrid electric systems combine solar-wind systems to get the most out of the region's seasonal wind and solar resources; since wind is relatively more available during the winter months and at night, on the other hand, the sun is available especially during the summer months and the sunny winter days [10]. However, the energy storage system must have a power supply continuity to cover any shortfall in electricity generation from renewable energy sources.…”
