This article describes the pilot study on the water reuse for agricultural irrigation in Korea. The project is a part of the application of wastewater reuse system for Agriculture project, a 21st Century Frontier R&D Program sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology and associated with the Sustainable Water Resources Research Program. The goal of the project was to develop infra-technologies necessary to reclaim wastewater for irrigation in agriculture. The project involved two phases: laboratory and field research. Reclamation techniques for irrigation and feasible reuse were developed as a first step in proposing appropriate water quality standards. Reclaimed wastewater of various qualities was used to irrigate cereal crops and vegetables, and possible adverse effects on crops, humans, and the environment were investigated. The optimal reclamation methods required to satisfy water quality standards were explored and the operational characteristics investigated. Moreover, an inventory of farmlands that could reuse reclaimed wastewater was established. Feasible delivery systems for irrigation were developed, and pilot project sites were identified. Finally, operational field data from pilot units were collected and analyzed. This research and development may help solve water shortage problems in Korea, which left unaddressed will have an adverse effect on future generations.

There are several types of wastewater reuse for agriculture, and an explicit classification is necessary before providing the proper management plan for the specific type. The objective of this study was to classify types of agricultural wastewater reuse for safe and sustainable wastewater irrigation. Three criteria were applied based on the reuse circumstances in Korea: (i) whether wastewater diluted with fresh water (direct/indirect); (ii) whether planned by government agencies (planned/unplanned); (iii) treatment level of wastewater (untreated wastewater/treated wastewater/reclaimed wastewater). The wastewater reuse for agriculture was classified into seven types. This study describes characteristics and a possible management practice for each reuse type, and also provides some representative cases. The proposed classification would contribute to a better understanding of agricultural wastewater reuse and help decision makers in both Korea and developing countries having agricultural similarity with Korea to provide optimal management plans. The purpose of this study was to analyze the water quality change when wastewater applied to study paddy fields. CREAMS-PADDY (Chemical, Runoff and Erosion from Agricultural Management System) model was used to estimate the field-scale water quality. Simulated results were compared with observed data monitored from Byeongjeom study paddy fields which is located near the Suwon sewage treatment plant in Gyeonggi-do. Significance analysis was performed for the three different irrigation water quality level and five fertilizer reduction scenarios using LSD (Least Significant Difference) and DMRT (Duncan's Multiple Range Test). Total nitrogen was found to be significant for both irrigation water quality level and fertilizer reduction while total phosphorus was not. Annual drainage load for total nitrogen was reduced by 66∼92 % compared to irrigation load when treated wastewater irrigated to study paddy fields from 2002 to 2007. Total phosphorus was reduced by 70∼86 %.
