“…a Prey length of maximal preference (Log(prey max )) and b was 2.55 and 0.17 in 4-8-mm larvae (r 2 = 0.34), 2.70 and 0.21 in 9-15-mm larvae (r 2 = 0.21) and 2.92 and 0.28 in 16-25-mm larvae (r 2 = 0.21), respectively. b Prey length to larval length ratio of maximal preference (Log(prey max )) and b was −1.21 and 0.18 in 4-8-mm larvae (r 2 = 0.31), −1.31 and 0.24 in 9-15-mm larvae (r 2 = 0.22) and −1.42 and 0.29 in 16-25-mm larvae (r 2 = 0.23), respectively Penney 1997; Simonsen et al 2006). Cod preferred prey size 4-6 % of their length well within the range found by Munk (1997).…”

“…In the case of sandeels, the literature indicates that early larval stages < 8 mm long feed exclusively on phytoplankton (Monteleone & Peterson 1986). Although the prey items are similar for all 5 taxa, the relative proportions of prey from gut analysis vary from fish to fish and study to study (Last 1980, Checkley 1982, Cohen & Lough 1983, Fossum 1983, Peterson & Ausubel 1984, Munk & Kiørboe 1985, Simonsen et al 2006. Fish larvae caught by the CPR are very small; Johnson (1977) reported that the larvae of Atlantic mackerel caught by the CPR were < 7 mm long, on average 5 mm.…”

“…Surprisingly, it is understudied, and the majority of research carried out on the plankton ecology of the system has focused on copepods and fish larvae (Munk et al 2003, Pedersen et al 2005, Simonsen et al 2006, Tang et al 2011). To our knowledge, there are a limited number of studies detailing the microbial food web in these waters and none of them quantify rates of microzooplankton grazing and growth, instead largely inferring microzooplankton grazing from community biomass and equations from the literature (Poulsen & Reuss 2002, Pedersen et al 2005, Arendt et al 2010).…”
