Femtosecond mode-locked Nd,La:CaF_2 disordered crystal laser

Abstract: A diode-pumped femtosecond mode-locked Nd,La:CaF 2 disordered crystal laser was reported for the first time. By appropriately choosing the Nd and La-doping concentration, stable mode-locked femtosecond laser pulses were obtained by using a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM). The laser produced 633 fs pulses at the central wavelength of 1061 nm with an average output power of 200 mW at 82 MHz repetition rate.

“…[ 30–33 ] The system also manifests excellent reversibility upon numerous wrinkled/flattened surface switching cycles (Figure 3h). And the corresponding large optical modulation of 72% change in transmittance within 5% strain in this system is also exceptionally outstanding, as compared to those of other reported strain tunable smart windows fabricated based on wrinkles, [ 12,14,16,18,20–22 ] wrinkles combined with other topography, [ 11,15,17 ] ridges, [ 19 ] pillars, [ 13 ] nano‐gaps, [ 23 ] and nano‐voids, [ 10 ] as shown in Figure 3i. Since the fabrication of this system is very facile and the raw materials are commercially available and inexpensive, it shows promise for large scale production.…”

“…Inspired by these remarkable natural adaptivities, artificial materials have been developed to exhibit analogous micropatterns based on a film‐substrate hybrid structure, in which the wrinkled surface can be triggered by mechanically, [ 8–23 ] thermally, [ 5,24 ] and solvent [ 4,25 ] induced compressive stress. Among these, the wrinkled morphologies can be generated by various mechanical means, including uniaxial [ 8–11 ] and/or biaxial [ 19,21,26 ] stretching/compressing, bending, [ 27,28 ] indenting, [ 5,29 ] and electrical driven actuation based on dielectric elastomers.…”

“…Earlier, oriented wrinkled surfaces are typically fabricated with prestrained elastic substrates modified by surface treatment, thereby offering a unique foundation for possessing both reversible and responsive behavior. These functional surfaces with controlled amplitude and periodicity have been applied in modifying surface wettability, [ 39,136,148 ] dynamic optical switches, [ 189 ] smart windows, [ 186 ] among others. Similarly, specific solvents may induce the generation of oriented wrinkles, which disappear when the solvent evaporates.…”

“…It is worth noting that non-optically active rare earth codopants, such as Y 3+ , La 3+ , Gd 3+ , or Lu 3+ , are often introduced together with Nd 3+ into CaF 2 in order to reduce interactions between Nd 3+ ions and overcome the luminescence quenching in Nd:CaF 2 due to clustering behavior of trivalent dopants in CaF 2 lattice. Efficient sub-picosecond pulsed NIR lasers have been reported using Nd,Y:CaF 2 , Nd,Lu:CaF 2 , and Nd,La:CaF 2 single crystals.…”
