Ferrocene-Functionalized Poly(6-(3,6-di(thiophen-2-yl)-9H-carbazol-9-yl)-hexyl Ferrocenecarboxylate): Effect of the Ferrocene on Electrochromic Properties

Abstract: A novel ferrocene-containing compound 6-(3,6-di(thiophen-2-yl)-9H-carbazol-9-yl)hexyl ferrocenecarboxylate (BTC-H-Fc) was synthesized by simple chemical route, and 3,6-di(thiophen-2-yl)-9H-carbazole (BTC) was prepared for comparison. Both of the homopolymers of BTC-H-Fc and BTC were successfully synthesized by electropolymerization and kept the redox activity upon repeated cycling between 0.0 V and 1.4 V. Compared to PBTC which could only showed two colors (yellow and purple), P(BTC-H-Fc) film could exhibit fo… Show more

“…In Fig. 6a, a well-defined maximum absorption band centered at 421 nm at the neutral state (0 V) of the pure PTBTPA film should be ascribed to the p-p* transition of the polymer backbone 33 and it gradually decreases with the increase of the potential. However, the bands at around 709 nm and 1100 nm increase with the increase of the potential at the same time, which is attributed to the evolution of polaron and bipolaron bands.…”

“…Compared to the pure PTBTPA film, a similar gap between the oxidation and reduction potentials of the PTBTPA-[BMIM]BF 4 film demonstrates that incorporation of the ionic liquid [BMIM]BF 4 with PTBTPA could also exhibit good electrochemical activity whilst preserving its original electrochromic performance. The UV-vis absorbance spectra of the pure PTBTPA film and the PTBTPA-[BMIM]BF 4 film are recorded as a function of wavelength at different applied potentials between 0 V and 1.4 V, as shown in Fig.6. “…were prepared according to our reported method. 25,26 4-Bromotriphenylamine and 4-Bromo-4', 4"-dimethyltriphenylamine were purchased from Energy Chemical (97%), NaO t Bu(Zhengzhou Xipaike Chemical Co., Ltd, 98%), Pd(OAc) 2 (Energy Chemical, 97%), P t Bu (Energy Chemical, 98%), Commercial HPLC grade acetonitrile (MeCN, Zhengzhou Xipaike Chemical Co., Ltd, 99.9%) was used without further purification. Tetrabutyl ammonium perchlorate (TBAP, Zhengzhou Xipaike Chemical Co., Ltd, 98%') was dried at 80 • C in vacuum for 12 h. 1 H and 13 C spectra of obtained monomers in CDCl 3 were recorded on the Bruker AVANCE III instrument (Germany).…”

“…Moreover, combination of donor and acceptor moieties in the polymer backbone not only enhances D-A interactions but also helps to improve optical, mechanical and electronic properties. 10 Recently, different kind of molecules like benzothiadiazole (BTd), quinoxaline and benzotriazole (BTz) are widely used as the electron deficient units. Especially, benzimidazole (BIm) has some attractive properties since the presence of both imine and amine nitrogen in its structure provides desired bandgap and optical properties.…”
