Fertility and parasitic infestation of Red Chittagong cattle

Abstract: Fertility of Red Chittagong bulls (RCB) using Non-Return Rate (NRR), reproductive efficiency of Red Chittagong cows (RCC) using pregnancy rate and number of services per pregnancy and parasitic infestation of two different ages and sexes were studied. The NRR ranged from 53.1% to 70.6% with an overall mean of 63.9%. Overall pregnancy rate was 65.8% and about 1.4 services were required per pregnancy. Overall 47.7% animals were infested with parasites. Five species of parasites were detected in the faeces: Balan… Show more

“…Habib (2011) found 1.4 ± 0.1 for the same herds. The result is similar to the reports (1.2 to 1.4 ± 0.1) reviewed by Azizunnesa et al (2010); Das et al (2010); Habib et al (2003) for the same genotype in different herds. Higher range (1.5 4 ± 0.1 to 1.6 ± 0.6) was reported by Hossain et al (2006); Bag et al (2010) in the same genotype in different herds.…”

“…The earlier work in the same herd reported 60-day non-return rate of RCC bulls as 63.9 ± 4.2% (Das et al, 2010), which is in line with this study. Miglior et al (1997) reported 65.4% for HolsteinFriesian in Italy.…”

“…Goat suffered from some extra species like Moniezia and Trichuris and the prevalence is just double in winter than that of summer (Table 5). In a study, Das et al, (2010) found 47.7% prevalence of Paramphistomum and 5.8% prevalence of Fasciola in Red Chittagong cattle of Bangladesh of which the first one is much higher and the second one is lower than the present findings. In another study, Sammadar et al, (2015) found 20.84%, 23.96% and 10.37% prevalence of Fasciola and 7.47%, 16.87% and 2.56% prevalence of Paramphistomum in cattle, buffalo and goats, respectively which are almost similar except that of goats with the present results.…”

“…The mean NSPC observed in this study (Table 1) is closely in agreement with the findings of Ahmed and Islam (1987) for RCC (1.57 ± 0.53) and Khan et al (1999) for Pabna deshi cows (1.57 ± 0.07). Comparatively lower NSPC (1.2 to 1.36 ± 0.067) was found by Habib et al (2003), Alam et al (1994) and Das (2008) for RCC and 1.16± 0.37 for indigenous cow (Ali et al, 2006). Jabber and Ali (1988); Majid et al (1995); Sultana and Bhuiyan (1997); Ahmed and Islam (1987) and Alam et al (1994) reported higher values of NSPC ranged between 1.6±0.86 to 1.78 ± 0.22 for non descript indigenous cows in their studies.…”
