“…After 11 days in culture, proportional summation of the rates of glucose usage by enriched myocytes and enriched fibroblasts is significantly lower than for mixed cells in culture of the same cell density, suggesting that a functional synergism is established between the cell types that may be reflected in the metabolic behavior. This proposal is strengthened by a recent report (Gross, 1982) in which the interaction between fibroblasts and myocytes from 8-day-old chick embryo heart was monitored cinematographically. Gross concluded that a n obligatory six-step process of fibroblast (or other nonmuscle cell)-myocyte interaction was imperative in obtaining synchronously contracting cardiac muscle cells.…”
