Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva-like in a cat

Abstract: Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva-like (FOP-like) was diagnosed in a young Brazilian cat presenting progressive lameness, pain upon manipulation and inability to extend the hind limbs. Due to poor response to medication described in the literature, only orchiectomy and confinement of the patient were recommended. The patient described here has been observed for four years and the animal is currently in fair condition despite the movement restrictions. Keywords: feline, myositis ossificans, heterotopic ossif… Show more

“…Similar descriptions involving various locations, including the masticatory muscle attachments, are well described in humans with FOP. 2,25 Such lesions were not specifically reported in cats with FOP-like disease, [8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16] but most likely correspond to early manifestations of the extra-skeletal bridging ossification process in our case.…”

“…8,10,11,14 Previous feline cases of FOP-like disease have shown a poor prognosis owing to rapid progression of the disease, generally leading to a decision of euthanasia a few weeks or months after initial presentation. [8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16] Cardiorespiratory failure, secondary to increased pulmonary vascular resistance, is the most common cause of death in human patients, 18 usually occurring during the second to fifth decades of life. 1,2 Involvement of the oromaxillofacial region is an additional concern, as it may compromise vital primary requirements, such as air and food intake.…”

“…In a study of a male cat with a clinical condition similar to FOP, histological analysis of ectopic bone showed mature bone tissue with preserved trabeculae and a hypercellular bone marrow. 56 Mesenchymal cells, which differentiate into bone-forming cells in response to stimulation by BMPs, are often denominated inducible osteoprogenitor cells. These cells are abundantly present in skeletal muscle and connective tissue, where bone formation can be induced more easily.…”
