Fibrous Dysplasia versus Juvenile Ossifying Fibroma: A Dilemma

Abstract: Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a condition characterized by excessive proliferation of bone forming mesenchymal cells which can affect one bone (monostotic type) or multiple bones (polyostotic type). It is predominantly noticed in adolescents and young adults. Fibrous dysplasia affecting the jaws is an uncommon condition. The most commonly affected facial bone is the maxilla, with facial asymmetry being the chief complaint. The lesion in many instances is confused with ossifying fibroma (OF). Diagnosis of these two… Show more

“…FD patients also usually seek medical treatments due to craniofacial malformations. 22 The disease is dominated by monostotic lesions whose incidence rate is twice that of polyostotic lesions. The incidence in males is equal to that in females, and the disease occurs more commonly in patients younger than 18 years old, which is identical with the result of our study.…”

“…5 Fibrous dysplasia (FD) belongs to the category of a benign fibroosseous in which the normal medullary bone and cortices are replaced by a disorganized fibrous woven bone due to disturbance in the maturation and remodeling of the bone. 1,5,6 It is accepted that mutation, or suppression of an intracytoplasmic transducer protein would be responsible for this disturbance. 5 The resultant fibro-osseous bone is more elastic and structurally weaker than the original bone.…”
