Fibrous Hamartoma of Infancy: Current Review

Abstract: This review examines 197 cases of fibrous hamartoma of infancy (FHI) described in the literature and provides a detailed clinicopathologic analysis of what is known to date of this peculiar lesion of the subcutis and lower dermis. The vast majority of these cases occurred within the first year of life (91%). Twenty-three percent were congenital. There was a predilection for boys with a male/female ratio of 2.4. Males and females had similar anatomic distribution with the most common locations being the axillar… Show more

“…Hamartomas are tumor-like benign formations that can be observed in all body parts and that occur because of the abnormal growth of tissue in an unusual amount and with an unusual mixture of cells (4). While most hamartomas are mesenchymal ones that do not include an epithelial tissue and that develop because of an abnormal growth of the mesenchymal tissue, epithelial-glandular hamartomas, which include a mixture of epithelial and glandular components, are less frequently observed (5).…”

“…This lesion commonly involves the muscles of the head, neck, and proximal extremities, similar to fibrous hamartoma of infancy. It is also a benign soft tissue tumor that presents during the first 2 years of life [3,4,8]. Histologic interpretation can be classified as diffuse or desmoid types.…”

“…In the etiology of hamartomas, causes including congenital malformation, hyperplasia of normal tissue and response to inflammation have been considered (1,3). Hamartomas usually occur as a painless mass and rapid growth may be seen in some cases.…”

“…Hamartomas usually occur as a painless mass and rapid growth may be seen in some cases. Familial characteristics or association with syndromes could not be demonstrated (1,4). Hamartomas can reach a diameter of 15 cm, but they are usually 2.5-5 cm in diameter (3).…”
