Field Comparison of Novel and Gold Standard Traps for Collecting Aedes albopictus in Northern Virginia

Abstract: Aedes albopictus is a potential West Nile virus bridge vector in Northern Virginia; however, information regarding its virus transmission dynamics is limited, as this species is not readily collected in existing traps. This study used 5 replicates of a 5 x 5 Latin square to evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of 2 novel host-seeking mosquito traps (the BG-Sentinel and the Collapsible Mosquito Trap (CMT-20) in collecting Ae. albopictus, relative to a carbon dioxide (CO2)-baited Centers for Disease Control… Show more

“…A new ventilator trap (BG-Sentinel™) used with a combination of odorant substances found on human skin focuses on host-seeking dengue mosquitoes. The BG-Sentinel trap has been shown to have much better catching rates than conventional traps (Kröckel et al 2006, Meeraus et al 2008. Both trap types allow for more specific and refined vector control campaigns in situations where the traditional tools are often marginally effective.…”

“…albopictus was found in BG-Sentinels placed in Libreville, Gabon (Krüger and Hagen 2007). A study comparing the CDC Light trap baited with carbon dioxide to the BG-Sentinel and another new trap, the CMT-20TM was published by Meeraus et al (2007). The BG-Sentinel baited only with the BG-Lure captured six times more Ae.…”

“…Nevertheless, only a few studies have investigated their efficacy regarding the capture of mosquito species other than those species of the genus Aedes. [26][27][28] However, biases related to mosquito diet in the fraction of blood-fed females captured could have major implications for the analyses and interpretation of data originating from mosquito bloodmeals. Indeed, some authors suggest that the synergistic effect of octenol (1-octen-3-ol) and CO 2 significantly increases the capture of mosquitoes that feed on mammals.…”

“…aegypti than CO 2 -baited encephalitis vector surveillance traps ) and significantly more female Ae. albopictus than CO 2 -baited CDC traps (Meeraus et al 2008), but the effect of CO 2 on catch rates of BGS traps for urban mosquitoes, mainly Ae. aegypti and Culex spp, has not been investigated in Brazil.…”
