Field detection of resistance to isometamidium chloride and diminazene aceturate in Trypanosoma vivax from the region of the Boucle du Mouhoun in Burkina Faso

Abstract: A longitudinal study assessed the chemoresistance to isometamidium chloride (ISM) and diminazene aceturate (DA) in the region of the Boucle du Mouhoun in Burkina Faso. A preliminary cross-sectional survey allowed the identification of the 10 villages with the highest parasitological prevalences (from 2.1% to 16.1%). In each of these 10 villages, two herds of approximately 50 bovines were selected, one being treated with ISM (1mg/kg b.w.) and the other remaining untreated as control group. All animals (treated … Show more

“…Animal trypanosomiasis is the most prevalent cattle disease in Africa and South America. It causes annual livestock production losses of several billions for the African continent and strongly hinders agricultural and economical development of emerging countries (Oliveira et al, 2009;Batista et al, 2012;Pimentel Dde et al, 2012;Sow et al, 2012). Trypanosoma vivax and T. congolense are the most prominent parasites involved in this disease that also affects sheep and goats.…”

“…Control of animal trypanosomosis is one of the key components to improve the productive opportunities of rural communities in tsetse-infested areas. This has been addressed using trypanocidal drugs which are limited in number and have been under extensive use for over 40 years with little or no regular monitoring (Stein et al, 2011;Chitanga et al, 2011;Mungube et al, 2012;Sow et al, 2012).…”

“…For instance trypanocidal drug resistance was observed for isometamidium chloride and diminazene aceturate against Trypanosoma congolense, Trypanosoma vivax and Trypanosoma evansi (Mungube et al, 2012;Sow et al, 2012;Kumar et al, 2012). The high infestation of lowlying areas by tsetse flies as well as T. congolense, T. vivax and T. bruceiwas also reported more than a decade back in Southern parts of Ethiopia (Abebe, 2005;Miruk et *Corresponding author.…”

“…Treatments with trypanocidal drugs constitute the most frequently used method for controlling trypanosomosis and maintaining susceptible breeds in tsetse infested areas. However, extended use of these drugs led to the development of chemoresistance in all trypanosomosis enzootic areas of Burkina Faso (Clausen et al, 1992;McDermott et al, 2003;Talaki et al, 2007;Sow et al, 2012).…”
