Field emission characteristics of electrochemically synthesized nickel nanowires with oxygen plasma post-treatment

Abstract: The field emissive, electrical, magnetic, and structural characteristics of nickel (Ni) nanowires synthesized using the electrochemical deposition method with an alumina nanoporous template are reported. The synthesis and formation of Ni nanowires were confirmed by XRD, SEM, and HR-TEM experiments. Ferromagnetic hysteresis curves and the metallic temperature dependence of the current-voltage characteristics were observed for the Ni nanowire systems. The nanotip emitters of the field emission cells of the Ni na… Show more

“…The Cu, Ni, or Co metal was directly grown potentiostatically at 0, -1.0, and -1.0 V (versus Ag/AgCl), respectively, using the same batch of PTh nanotubes and including the template. For the synthesis of the Ni nanotube, the electrolyte consisted of a solution of NiSO 4 [23]. The detailed electrochemical deposition method for the Ni or Cu nanowires has previously been reported [25].…”

“…It is noted that the metallic temperature dependence of direct current (d.c.) conductivity, that is the monotonic increase of d.c. conductivity with lowering temperature, for native Ni nanowires (filled inside), has previously been reported. [23] An elemental analysis of the hybrid PTh/Ni nanotubes has been performed by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) experiments during measurements of the HR-TEM images. The magnification of the HR-TEM image and elemental analysis of the hybrid PTh/Ni single nanotube are shown in Figure 1f.…”

“…Metallic nanowires of Mo, Cu, Co have been used as nanotips for field emission application (Hwang, 2005;Laurent, 2005;Liao, 2005). Field emission characteristics of electrochemically synthesized nickel nanowires on alumina nanoporous template, with oxygen plasma post treatment, have been reported (Joo, 2006). Nickel nanorods arrays have been vertically grown on a Ta-coated Si substrate by electrochemical process (Banerjee, 2011).…”

“…Current density (J) is related to the electric field (E) and describes as J = aE 2 exp(-b/E). The constants of a and b are expressed by 1.56×10 -10 β 2 /φ and 6.83×10 9 φ 1.5 /β, respectively, where φ is the local work function and β is the field enhancement factor (Joo et al, 2006).…”
