Field-flow fractionation

Abstract: Recent years have seen an explosive growth in methodology, instrumentation, and data handling for liquid chromatography of macromolecules. New packing materials are steadily emerging that allow the user to perform highly efficient separations with low nonspecific adsorption and minimal hydrolysis of the stationary phase, even under chemically harsh conditions. Matrices for size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) are becoming even more porous and therefore capable of processing polymers of ultra-high molecular wei… Show more

“…Size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) provides stoichiometric information about the gelatin/ Complex formation between anionic polyelectrolytes polyanion complex, while flow field-flow fractionation and the net negatively charged gelatin (i.e., at a pH (flow FFF) determines the hydrodynamic size of the higher than the isoelectric point of gelatin, pH iso Å 4. 9) complex. Thus, the isolated gelatin/polyanion complex was investigated previously 1 by light scattering.…”

“…This parameter categorizes the overlap of two specific component zones. If the centers of gravity of the two zones are founded at locations X1 and X2, respectively, then the resolution can be defined as 17 (4) where X is the peak retention volume; Wb is the peak width formed by intersection of the tangents to the curve inflection points with the baseline in retention volume units, Wb = 4σ and σ is the peak standard deviation (proportional to peak width).…”

“…1 Among the various FFF sub techniques, flow field flow fractionation (flow FFF) is potentially capable of the rapid separation of a wide variety of macromolecular and colloidal materials at high resolution. [2][3][4] In 1986 an asymmetrical flow FFF system was developed by two different groups. 5,6 In the system, only one of the channels is permeable for the solvent.…”

“…SF belongs to the closely related family of field-flow fractionation (FFF) techniques (23)(24)(25). SF and FFF both use laminar flows in thin unpacked channels and apply perpendicular fields for separation; however, their separation mechanisms differ.…”
