Field Performance of Pinus radiata D. Don Produced in Nursery with Different Types of Containers

Abstract: Abstract. We have studied the development in nurseries of containerized Pinus radiata produced with different container systems in order to choose the most suitable system for producing wellbalanced plants with an optimal root system. At the end of the production period, significant differences were found in morphological responses among the seedlings to the various container characteristics. Seedlings grown in containers that permitted lateral air puning presented less growth and lower biomass production. How… Show more

“…Seedlings in the AIR-2, a container of similar width-depth combination and a slightly lower volume than Tubex, were smaller. Containers with strong air pruning can cause plant stress due to loss of root tips and less new root development (Ortega et al 2006;Amoroso et al 2010); the narrow and deep shape of AIR-2 could have enhanced the effects of these two factors, resulting in reduced seedling growth.…”

“…Seedlings in CCL-30 containers showed a longer tap root, allowing the tip of the tap root to reach deeper layers than CCS-18 containers. This favours the colonization of the deepest horizons by new roots due to the amount of roots located at the bottom of the root plug (Biran and Eliassaf, 1980;Ortega et al, 2006). At outplanting, this deeper positioning of the root system may help to avoid or reduce the competition for water with herbaceous plants in the top soil horizons, which can be an important factor limiting seedling performance in the field (Grossnickle, 2005).…”
