Field testing of repurposed electric vehicle batteries for price-driven grid balancing

Abstract: As electric cars become more widespread, the disposal and recycling of used batteries will become an important challenge. Typically, vehicle batteries are replaced if their capacity drops to 70-80% of initial capacity. However, they may still be useful for stationary applications. In this paper, results from a field test of a molten salt high-temperature electric vehicle battery repurposed as stationary storage for grid balancing are presented. In a previous study, we have shown that a mixed integer linear pro… Show more

“…Both u + DC,i and u − DC,i can be 0, representing battery idle mode. Since u + DC,i and u − DC,i are floating values, additional Boolean variables inspired from the work in [11] are used to ensure charging/discharging exclusion where x c,i represents charging selected and x d,i represents discharging selected…”

“…Storing energy in stationary buffers such as battery energy storage systems (BESSs) in combination with modern computational methods for flexibility control is a promising avenue, since BESSs can be implemented almost anywhere in the grid. Such storage systems can be used autonomously, mostly as a small-scale unit such as in [11,12], or in an aggregated form, clustered, for example, in a virtual power plant in combination with other distributed energy resources [13,14]. In the case of autonomous optimization, the storage systems are individually controlled on-site, while in the case of a virtual power plant, the storage systems in the cluster are controlled centrally.…”

“…Nowadays, with the demand of high energy density, long calendar, and high reliability for energy storage, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are widely used ( Faessler et al., 2019 ; Wang et al., 2017 ). However, the safety issue is always a concern and accidents caused by LIBs cannot be completely avoided due to the instability of LIBs under abuse conditions ( Liu et al., 2020a ; Xu et al, 2021 ).…”
