Filtration capacity of the ascidian Ciona intestinalis and its grazing impact in a shallow fjord

Abstract: Filtration capacity of the ascidian Ciona intestinalis (L.) was measured in the laboratory and determined from the exponential reduction in algal cell (Rhodomonas sp.) concentration as a function of time. Filtration rate (F, m1 min-l) as a function of dry weight (W, g) was found to be F= 118~:;$ and F = 199~:;6:,, for total dry weight and dry weight of organs, respectively.
