Final report on APMP.PR-S4: Comparison of fiber optic power meter responsivity

Abstract: The APMP.PR-S4 comparison of fiber optic power responsivity and nonlinearity at 1550 nm, from 1 mW to 250 mW, was carried out. In total three institutes participated: NMIJ (Japan), PTB (Germany) and NPL (United Kingdom). The measurements started in December 2008 and ended in December 2009.For fiber optic power responsivity, all participants reported their results and all results were used for the intercomparison: no measurement was subject to rejection. For nonlinearity two participants reported their results,… Show more

“…Low-reflectance materials have many applications, such as in photothermal conversion of solar energy [1][2][3][4] and photothermal detectors [5][6][7][8][9]. Currently available broadband low-reflectance materials include gold black [7]; carbon nanotubes (CNTs) [8][9][10][11][12][13]; black nickels [3,4,14], including porous nickelphosphorus (NiP) black surfaces [1,[15][16][17][18][19][20]; and black paint.…”

“…We have used porous NiP black as an optical absorber in standard electrical substitution radiometers at the National Metrology Institute of Japan (NMIJ), such as laser calorimeters [5,6], because we can use it as an absorber plate having low reflection loss without any geometrical optical cavities or traps. This has the great advantage of high thermal equivalence in electrical substitution even at room temperature.…”

“…Optical power meters are indispensable in various photonics fields, such as fiber optic communications and laser system diagnostics, providing accurate average optical power light measurements [1][2][3][4][5]. Commercial optical power meters which seeks to address these limitations by exploring an alternative approach that leverages recent advancements in photodiode technology and the growing trend of do-it-yourself (DIY) electronics, all of this combined with an affordable cost.…”
