Fine Surveying and 3D Modeling Approach for Wooden Ancient Architecture via Multiple Laser Scanner Integration

Abstract: A multiple terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) integration approach is proposed for the fine surveying and 3D modeling of ancient wooden architecture in an ancient building complex of Wudang Mountains, which is located in very steep surroundings making it difficult to access. Three-level TLS with a scalable measurement distance and accuracy is presented for data collection to compensate for data missed because of mutual sheltering and scanning view limitations. A multi-scale data fusion approach is proposed for da… Show more

“…The dimensional data of the building, of the machinery stored inside and of the site were respectively acquired by means of the following tools: TLS Leica ® C10, handheld scanner (HS) Trimble ® DPI-8 and geodetic global navigation satellite system (GNSS) Leica ® GS12. The use of a HS in the indoor survey is motivated by the presence of machinery causing the problem of cast-shadows (Hu et al, 2016) thus determining several blind spots not detectable by the TLS. Raw data collected as 3D point clouds from several surveys have been homogenised into a single platform.…”

“…However, those methods are too inflexible, which cannot reflect the unique artistic conception and steric space of ancient gardens [3]. While virtual reality provides a new way of expression for the restoration design of ancient gardens.…”

“…For the majority of the 3D modeling based on precisely measured data, even though it is used in some areas like archaeology [13][14][15], historic building [16,17], and paleobiology [18], their fundamental objectives are still limited to information preservation and image display, and fail to support the in-depth research of cultural relic restoration. We have to pay more attention to a few examples.…”
