The discrete element method (DEM) and the moving particle semi-implicit (MPS) method are the most popular mesh-free particle methods in the discontinuum and continuum. This paper describes a state-of-the-art modeling on multi-phase flows using these mesh-free particle methods. Herein, a combinational model of the signed distance function (SDF) and immersed boundary method (IBM) is introduced for an arbitrary-shaped wall boundary in the DEM simulation. Practically, this model uses a simple operation to create the wall boundary. Although the SDF is a scalar field for the wall boundary of the DEM, it is useful for the wall boundary of the CFD through combination with the IBM. Validation tests are carried out to demonstrate the adequacy of the SDF/IBM wall boundary model. Regarding the mesh-free particle method for continuum, the phase change problem is one of the challenging topics, as the solid state is usually modeled by extremely high viscous fluid in the phase change simulation. The phase change simulation is shown to be efficiently performed through an implicit algorithm and a heat flux model in the MPS method. The adequacy of these models is verified by the numerical examples.

Compaction analysis and optimisation of convex-faced pharmaceutical tablets using numerical techniques

Capping failure, edge chipping, and non-uniform mechanical properties of convexfaced pharmaceutical tablets are common problems in pharma industry. In this paper, Finite Element Modelling (FEM) and Design of Experiment (DoE) techniques are adopted to find the optimal shape of convex-faced (CF) pharmaceutical tablet which has more uniform mechanical properties and less capping and chipping tendency. The effects of the geometrical parameters and friction on the compaction responses of convex-faced pharmaceutical tablets were first identified and analysed. The finite element model of the tabletting process was generated using the implicit code (ABAQUS) and validated against experimental measurements. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was employed to establish the relationship between the design variables, represented by the geometrical parameters and the friction coefficient, and compaction responses of interest including residual die pressure, the variation of relative density within the tablet, and the relative shear stress of the edge of the tablet. A statistical-based optimisation approach is then employed to undertake shape optimisation of CF tablets. The obtained results demonstrated how the geometrical parameters of CF tablet and the friction coefficient have significant effects on the compaction behaviour and quality of the pharmaceutical tablet.

The deformation mechanisms in powder compaction can be described by a constitutive model, which is the cornerstone for modeling the powder compaction process by finite element simulation. Therefore, establishing a proper constitutive model is of great importance to investigate the forming rule of powder compaction as well as optimize the mold design and process parameters. The compaction behavior of 6061 aluminum alloy powder was described by the Drucker-Prager Cap (DPC) model. The model parameters and the powder densification behavior were determined and investigated by various powder compaction experiments. The modified DPC model with the determined material parameters was validated using finite element simulation method in ABAQUS with USDFLD user subroutine. The simulation results are consistent with the experiment measurements indicating that the established constitutive model can accurately describe the compaction behavior of 6061 aluminum alloy powder. Especially for the relative density exceeds 0.75, the simulation accuracy is quite high, which means that the determined model can well describe the powder behaviors at later stage of compaction process. In addition, eight representative compaction equations were employed to fit the powder die compaction experimental data and the results showed that Kawakita equation is most suitable to describe the relationship between the pressure and density for the cold die compaction process of 6061 aluminum alloy powder. Taking friction coefficient and temperature into account, a warm compaction equation of 6061 aluminum alloy powder was established. High fitting precisions of the warm compaction equation were obtained with the temperature 1 T of 100℃~150℃ and the friction coefficient  of 0~0.1.
