First Characterization of a Cluster of VanA-Type Glycopeptide-ResistantEnterococcus faecium,Colombia

Abstract: glycopeptide-resistant enterococci (GRE) were isolated from 23 infected patients at a teaching hospital in Medellín, Colombia. Identification at the species level and by multiplex polymerase chain reaction assay indicated that all isolates were Enterococcus faecium. The isolates were highly resistant to ampicillin, ciprofloxacin, gentamicin, penicillin, streptomycin, teicoplanin, and vancomycin; they were susceptible only to chloramphenicol, linezolid, and nitrofurantoin. Determination of glycopeptide genotype… Show more

“…However, they were highly resistant to aminoglicosides, limiting thus the success of such asso-ciated antibiotic therapy. The concomitant resistance observed to chloramphenicol, penicillin, erythromycin, teicoplanin, ciprofloxacin, and tetracycline confirms that resistance of enterococci to multiple antibiotics is common, as also observed by Panesso et al (2002). Linezolide was highly effective against all the isolates, indicating it as an appropriate therapeutic option.…”

“…It is probable that Klebsiella strains with MDR phenotype carry the co-presence of chloramphenicol resistance determinants (e.g., cat genes) with other resistance determinants in transposons on plasmids [90].
