First genetically verified occurrence of Ligula pavlovskii outside its native range and characteristics of its infection in Neogobius fluviatilis

Abstract: In this study, we provide the first genetically verified distribution record of Ligula pavlovskii, a high-impact endoparasite of Ponto-Caspian gobies, beyond its native range. According to parasitological surveys, ligulosis was detected for the first time in monkey goby individuals collected from Lake Balaton in 2004, 34 years after the first record of monkey goby in the lake. During a Lake Balaton survey in 2018, we detected tapeworms in 44.4% of the sampled monkey gobies. This prevalence is about two to ten … Show more

“…Ligula phylogenies based on ddRAD and mtDNA data revealed 11 distinct lineages and showed a generally well-supported phylogenetic structure for the Ligula species complex. We characterized several new lineages from previously unexplored areas (CSA, EAR) or lineages that were not analysed in the global context before (L. pavlovskii, New Zealand; see Lagrue et al, 2018;Vitál et al, 2021). In addition, several differences in the phylogeny of the group were recovered compared to previous studies based on fewer loci and less material Štefka et al, 2009).…”

“…The monogenean Gyrodactylus proterorhini, infecting all four goby species, was introduced into the river basins of the Vistula (Kvach et al 2014;Mierzejewska et al 2014), Rhine (Huyse et al 2015;Ondračková et al 2015aOndračková et al , 2021, Middle Danube (Ondračková et al 2009(Ondračková et al , 2021, and Middle Dnieper (Zaichenko 2015). Finally, the co-introduction of cestodes along with the monkey goby was reported for Ligula pavlovskii in Southern Hungary (Vitál et al 2021) and Proteocephalus gobiorum the Middle Dnieper (Kvach et al 2014;Zaichenko 2015).…”
