First occurrence of Sugarcane streak mosaic virus infecting sugarcane in Indonesia

Abstract: On plants at 59 sugarcane plantations in Central and East Java, Indonesia, we found virus-like symptoms such as streak mosaic. The virus was transmitted mechanically and was sett-borne. The nucleotide sequence of the coat protein gene had the highest identity with that of Sugarcane streak mosaic virus (SCSMV) isolate Pakistani. We tentatively designate this isolate as SCSMV-Idn (Indonesia).

“…To date, SCSMV has a broad host range and has been found from sugarcane in India, Pakistan, USA, China, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and Indonesia (Hall et al, 1998;Chatenet et al, 2005;Damayanti and Putra, 2011;Li et al, 2011), from sorghum in India (Srinivas et al, 2010) and weeds in Indonesia (Prabowo et al, 2014). Seven full length genomic sequences of SCSMV isolates from Pakistan, Thailand, India, and China have been published (Xu et al, 2010;Li et al, 2011;Parameswari et al, 2013).…”

“…However, in India and several other Asian countries, members of the species Sugarcane streak mosaic virus (SCSMV), genus Poacevirus, family Potyviridae, are also found to be a major cause of mosaic disease [1][2][3][4]. In sugarcane-growing states of India, SCSMV is more prevalent than SCMV [5,6].…”

“…The highly incidence of the CarMV might be facilitated by mechanical transmission via cutter such as knives or scissors during preparation of plant materials before planting or during harvesting. SCSMV was also reported rapidly distributed in Java, Indonesia facilitated with similar manner (Damayanti and Putra, 2011). CarMV can be easily transmitted by sap of diseased plants, cuttings scissors or contact between plants (Safari et al, 2009).…”
