First on-sky closed loop measurement and correction of atmospheric dispersion

Abstract: In the field of exoplanetary sciences, high contrast imaging is crucial for the direct detection of, and answering questions about habitability of exoplanets. For the direct imaging of habitable exoplanets, it is important to employ low inner working angle (IWA) coronagraphs, which can image exoplanets close to the PSF. To achieve the full performance of such coronagraphs, it is crucial to correct for atmospheric dispersion to the highest degree, as any leakage will limit the contrast. To achieve the highest c… Show more

“…In addition, we refer the reader for specific details and results about each module to the numerous other articles in SPIE proceedings. [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14] SCExAO operates downstream of the facility AO system, AO188 15 at the Subaru Telescope. AO188 offers Strehl ratios of 30 − 40% in the H-band, in median seeing conditions.…”

“…Previously we presented a new focal plane based technique to measure the presence of residual atmospheric dispersion on-sky with a high-precision. 4,5 In this paper we present closed-loop correction of dispersion and improvement in flux suppression by a high-performance vortex coronagraph by closed-loop correction of dispersion.…”
