First record of a sea spider (Pycnogonida) from an anchialine habitat

Abstract: ABSTRACT. The anchialine fauna from the Yucatan Peninsula has been extensively studied since the 1980´s. "Sea spiders" or Pycnogonida, have never been found in these systems before. A record for Anoplodactylus batangensis (Helfer, 1938) from a cenote (sinkhole) in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico is presented herein. The pycnogonid was found in waters of the cenote Nohoch Nah Chich, part of the Sac Actun anchialine system, in the State of Quintana Roo. This species was already reported from the northeastern shore… Show more

“…In that site, there was also the only record of Pycnogonida that is generally recognized as a marine taxon. Pycnogonida have a few representatives in the meiofauna, but the Anoplodactylus genus has some species that ranges in the meiofaunal body size and are also tolerant to salinity variations until values comparable to those found in C2 (11 PSU) [64].…”

“…The anchialine cave systems of the world have been intensely studied during the last three decades since their discovery and the improvement of diving techniques to explore them (Iliffe 2018, Iliffe and. The vast majority of studies so far conducted with anchialine fauna are of a taxonomic nature, often with descriptions of new species, or presenting new distributional records (Alvarez and Ojeda 2018, Iliffe and Alvarez 2018, Alvarez et al 2015, 2019. Although basic ecological questions are of great importance, few studies have been published regarding the population dynamics of key species, trophic interactions and seasonal variations in diversity and abundance in these environments (Pohlman et al 1997, Havird et al 2015, Brankovits et al 2017.…”

“…Further exploration of the intertidal rocky shores of the coasts of Veracruz confirmed the presence of Achelia sawayai Marcus, 1940and Anoplodactylus californicus Hall, 1912(Vasallo et al, 2014, whereas Anoplodactylus batangensis (Helfer, 1938) was discovered in anchialine waters in Yucatán (Alvarez and Ojeda, 2018), and a new record for Baja California Sur (BCS), Eurycyde bamberi De León-Espinosa and De León-González, 2015, was described. These three states are part of the main ports and touristic regions in Mexico.…”
