One of the oldest reservoirs in Peninsular Malaysia, Bukit Merah Reservoir, is a place in which locals participate in fishing activities. Inland fisheries are important to individuals, society and the environment; whereby they generate a source of income and food security. It is essential to gauge the nutrition value of fish caught in this location as food source, especially in terms of fatty acid composition, to better demonstrate its potential towards the betterment of human health and general well-being. From an initial list of 47 fish species available in Bukit Merah Reservoir, a total of seven edible freshwater fish species were identified, namely tinfoil barb (Barbonymus schwanenfeldii), Javanese barb (Barbonymus gonionotus), hampala barb (Hampala macrolepidota), beardless barb (Cyclocheilichthys apogon), glassfish (Oxygaster anomalura), striped snakehead (Channa striata) and horseface loach (Acantopsis dialuzona), and muscle fatty acid content was analysed to determine their nutritional value. Muscle of cyprinid fish contained substantial amount of omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) compared to fish from Channidae and Cobitidae families. Javanese and tinfoil barbs muscle recorded the highest levels of combined eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) indicating the highest nutritional value comparatively. Unexpectedly, the striped snakehead, a predatory carnivore, contained lower levels of LC-PUFA compared to detrivorous/herbivorous fishes. This further justifies that the omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) content in fish muscle varies according to their feeding habits. Even though it has been recommended that marine fish be consumed to improve health to a certain extent, there still are benefits of consuming freshwater fish, as there are several species which contain considerable amounts of beneficial omega-3 PUFA.

The present study examines the diet of pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) in Iberian freshwaters. Food habits of Sander lucioperca were studied based on stomach content analyses of 376 specimens (12.22-52.52 cm total length) collected in 2009 on a south-western Iberian reservoir. A total of 265 stomachs (79.52%) contained food, and fifteen taxonomic levels of prey were identified. The most important prey was fish according to the Relative Importance Index (IRI). Trophic level analysis revealed that S. lucioperca is a top predator throughout its life history. There were no differences between sexes (p = 0.573, ANOSIM) and seasons (p = 0.266) in the diet composition, but minor dietary shifts with ontogeny were found. The Levins' standardized index indicated wider niche breadth for small pikeperch, whereas larger pikeperch specimens showed a narrow niche breadth with a specialization in congeners. The graphical analysis (Amundsen method) of the diet confirmed that pikeperch feed mainly on congeners in Alcántara reservoir; however some native species were also consumed.

ABSTRAKDalam mendukung program domestikasi ikan tengadak asal Kalimantan Barat perlu dilakukan karakterisasi fenotipe untuk mengevaluasi perubahan tingkat keragaman dari tiga generasi ikan tengadak dan antisipasi keberhasilan domestikasi yang dilakukan. Analisis keragaman fenotipe dilakukan secara biometri berdasarkan meristik dan morfometrik terhadap 30 ekor sampel dari masing-masing generasi. Hasil karakterisasi menunjukkan pada tiga generasi ikan tengadak terdapat kesamaan ciri-ciri meristik. Hasil truss morfometrik berdasarkan analisis fungsi kanonikal terhadap 21 karakter, generasi yang berbeda tersebar pada kuadran yang berbeda, G-0 berada di bagian bawah diagram kanonikal (kuadran 3 dan 4), G-1 berada di bagian kiri diagram (kuadran 1 dan 4), sedangkan G-2 sebagian besar di bagian atas diagram (kuadran 1, 2, dan 3). Berdasarkan truss morfometrik, kesamaan karakter terdapat pada garis yang menghubungkan ujung mulut dan ujung operculum bawah (A-1), garis yang menghubungkan awal sirip dorsal dan awal sirip anal (B6), garis yang menghubungkan awal sirip dorsal dan akhir sirip anal (C3), garis yang menghubungkan awal sirip anal dan akhir sirip anal (C5), garis yang menghubungkan akhir sirip dorsal dan akhir sirip anal (C6), garis yang menghubungkan akhir sirip dorsal dan awal sirip ekor atas (D1), garis yang menghubungkan akhir sirip dorsal dan akhir sirip ekor bawah (D3), dan garis yang menghubungkan akhir sirip anal dan awal sirip ekor bawah (D5). Analisis indeks keseragaman intrapopulasi (sharing component) menunjukkan keseragaman genetik tertinggi terdapat pada ikan tengadak generasi pertama (G-1) dan kedua (G-2) sebesar 76,7%; dan indeks keseragaman interpopulasi sebesar 3,3%-30% antara populasi ikan tengadak G-0 dan G-2. Ketersediaan jumlah induk yang dipijahkan dapat memengaruhi indeks keseragaman populasi. KATA KUNCI: ikan tengadak

Abstract: The South-east Asian cyprinid Barbonymus schwanenfeldii is recorded for the first time in the Iberian Peninsula from two specimens collected in the Guadiana River Basin in 2005. Their presence is probably due to release from aquaria.
