First record of the rare genus Typhrasa (Psathyrellaceae, Agaricales) from China with description of two new species

Abstract: Typhrasa is a rare genus that comprises two species and that has previously been reported only from Europe and North America. The present study expands the geographical scope of the genus by describing two new species – T. polycystis and T. rugocephala – from subtropical China. The new species are supported by morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analyses (ITS, LSU and tef-1α). The new species have very similar morphological characteristics and are 98% similar in their ITS region. However, T. rugocep… Show more

“…The ITS, nrLSU, and RPB2 gene regions were amplified using the primer pairs of ITS1F/ITS4 for ITS (Gardes and Bruns, 1993 ), LR0R/LR7 for nrLSU (Vilgalys and Hester, 1990 ), and bRPB2-6F/bRPB2-7.1R for RPB2 (Matheny, 2005 ). The settings of PCR cycles were based on the study of Wang et al ( 2021 ). Then, the PCR products were sent to the Beijing Genomics Institute for purification and sequencing.…”

“…In addition, the pileus surface of I. reticulopilea is covered by a white, inconspicuous, but persistent villus. This feature also readily distinguishes I. reticulopilea from known species of Typhrasa (Örstadius et al 2015;Wang et al 2021).…”

“…From 2015, we initiated a study of Chinese psathyrelloid species and described 15 new taxa Bau 2017, 2018a,b;Yan et al 2019;Bau and Yan 2021a,b;Wang et al 2021). By chance, we collected a psathyrelloid species with a reticulate-ridged pileus, that was reminiscent of Pluteus thomsonii (Berk.…”

“… Örstadius et al (2015) understood that “psathyrelloid” means that certain species of fungi with the morphology of Psathyrella , but belong to other genera in the phylogenetic analysis, so the species of Psathyrella were not included. These fungi were mainly distributed in Coprinopsis ( Örstadius et al 2015 ), Typhrasa ( Örstadius et al 2015 ; Wang et al 2021 ), Parasola ( Ganga and Manimohan 2019 ), Homophron ( Örstadius et al 2015 ), Cystagaricus ( Örstadius et al 2015 ), Kauffmania ( Örstadius et al 2015 ), Lacrymaria ( Yan 2018 ) and so on. According to Redhead et al (2001) , coprinoid mushrooms were distributed in four genera: Coprinus , Parasola , Coprinopsis and Coprinellus .…”
