First Report of ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma asteris’ Associated with “Witches'-Brooms” on Jointleaf Rush (Juncus articulatus) in Poland

Abstract: Juncus articulatus L. (Juncaceae) is a species of rush occurring in Eurasia, Canada, and the United States. In 2013, symptoms of “witches'-brooms,” similar to those associated with phytoplasma infection in other plants, were observed on jointleaf rush plants in Lower Silesia (southwest Poland), with some pests feeding on them. Livia junci (Liviinae, Hemiptera) is a small plant-feeding sap-sucking insect that affects monocotyledonous plants. To confirm the presence of phytoplasma in 15 examined plants, total DN… Show more

“…Phytoplasmas belonging to six taxonomic groups (16SrI, 16SrIII, 16SrV, 16SrX, 16SrXII and 16SrXXI) were reported in Poland (Cieślińska, Hennig, Kruczyńska, & Bertaccini, 2015; Jurga & Zwolińska, 2020; Kamińska, Berniak, & Obdrzałek, 2011; Zwolińska, Krawczyk, & Pospieszny, 2012). The 16SrI group dominates among them affecting at least 18 species of crop, horticulture, orchard and forestry plants (Cieślińska & Kowalik, 2011; Zwolińska, Borodynko‐Filas, Nowaczyk, & Hasiów‐Jaroszewska, 2019) and 16 species of noncrop plants (Jarzembowski, Berniak, Faltyn, Jakubska‐Busse, & Proćków, 2015; Zwolińska, Krawczyk, et al, 2019). ' Candidatus Phytoplasma asteris' subgroup 16SrI‐B strains are the most frequently found phytoplasmas in Poland.…”
