First report of Trypanosoma cruziinfection in naturally infected dogs from southern Bahia, Brazil

Abstract: In order to verify the Trypanosoma cruzi infection in domestic domiciled dogs in a rural endemic area from the south region of the State of Bahia, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) were performed using S35 and S36 primers in 272 dogs living in the district of Vila Operaria, in the municipality of Buerarema. All animals were clinically evaluated; 2.5 mL of blood were collected through venipuncture for the performance of molecular tests. None of these animals showed clinical signs of the illness and only two were … Show more

“…Serological tests have been used due to the high costs of the PCR technique, which is used only for experimental purposes or to confirm discrepant serological results (OPAS, 2009). However, PCR results showed a low prevalence (0.5%) of natural T. cruzi infection in dogs, corroborating the results obtained by Leça-Júnior et al (2013), who also investigated the natural infection in domiciled dogs with the same technique and found a 0.7% infection rate.…”

“…Previous studies have already shown that dogs are naturally infected by this protozoan (GÜRTLER et al, 2007;LEÇA-JÚNIOR et al, 2013). The main clinical signs observed in these animals are anorexia, fever, lymphadenopathy, and cardiac alterations such as myocarditis, tachycardia, severe cardiac arrhythmia (CAMACHO, 2003;NELSON;COUTO, 2006), congestive heart failure, and diastolic dysfunction (PASCON et al, 2010;SANTANA et al, 2012).…”

“…Dogs have been found infected by vector-borne protozoa, including Babesia gibsoni , Babesia vogeli , Rangelia vitalii , Hepatozoon canis , Leishmania amazonensis , Leishmania braziliensis , Leishmania infantum , Trypanosoma cruzi , and Trypanosoma evansi [ 73 , 78 - 82 , 85 , 87 - 90 , 96 , 102 - 104 , 109 - 113 , 117 - 121 ],[ 124 , 128 - 130 ]. Other protozoa of unknown pathogenicity (e.g., Trypanosoma caninum ) have also been described in Brazilian dogs [ 108 ].…”
