Fishers’ perception of a 35-year old exclusive Fisheries Management Zone

Abstract: a b s t r a c tFishers' attitudes and perceptions are critical for the success of fisheries protection areas with their associated biota, and a failure to understand fishers' behaviour may undermine the success of such fisheries management measures. In this study, we examine fishers' perception of a long-established exclusive fisheries zone around Malta and to investigate if the perceptions depend on fishers' demographic, economic, social characteristics and fishing activity of the fishers. “…Governing interactions a) Relevance: People's images of MPAs are also determined by their perceptions of MPA outcomes (Breen and Breen 2008;Dimech et al 2009;Gerhardinger et al 2009;Launio et al 2010;Webb et al 2004). Their satisfaction with what the MPA provides would then depend on their expectations-the higher they are, the more likely that the MPA will lead to disappointment.…”

“…We argue for greater focus on other nondirect benefits related to the existence (fish for the future generations) and the bequest (aesthetic benefits) values of an MPA, which were also identified as being important factors influencing attitudes and actions toward MPAs. Not all fishers are motivated by the same desire for financial gain (Dimech et al 2009). Other types of MPA benefits, which are often ignored in the win-win discourse surrounding MPAs, also have a role to play in influencing support.…”

“…As such, commercial fishers are amongst those most directly affected by MPAs Jones, 2008) and that can impact on MPAs the most. The performance of MPAs depends, at least partly, on fishers' behaviour (Dimech et al, 2009;Suuronen et al, 2010) and a failure to understand their attitudes and perceptions towards issues related to MPAs may undermine their success (Himes, 2007;Jones, 2008;Charles & Wilson, 2009;Dimech et al, 2009).…”
